Mary Farlow 1921-2011
Funeral service for Mary Farlow of Emmetsburg was Saturday, Feb. 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Roger Maize, pastor of the United Methodist church in Ruthven, officiated.
Burial was in the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery at Van Meter. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Lois Farlow, daughter of Leonard and Della (Keith) Moore, was born Dec. 13, 1921, in Bedford. She graduated from Bedford High School and then attended Maryville Teachers College in Missouri. She taught country school for two years
On June 23, 1942, Mary was united in marriage to Floyd Francis Farlow in Reno, NV.
In 1952 she and Floyd moved to Emmetsburg where she assisted Floyd in the Phillips 66 oil business. They owned and managed the Phillips 66 for 39 years.
Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Church Circle in Emmetsburg. She was also a member of Pythian Sisters, Order of the Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Matron, and V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.
Mary won the state championship in the muzzle loader division for women. She participated in several shooting contests and still held a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
Mary passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at her home near Emmetsburg, at the age of 89.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a great granddaughter, Joy Portillo.
Mary is survived by her husband, Floyd of Emmetsburg; her children, Beverly Farlow of Stewartville, MN, William Farlow (Mary) of West Des Moines, Virginia Portillo (Richard) of Rochester, MN, and Virgil Farlow (Jacci) of Aurora, NY; ten grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and a sister, Josephine Root of Seattle, WA.
