Ferne Hatch 1913-2011

Funeral service for Ferne Hatch of Emmetsburg is Friday, Feb. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Linda Morris will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at the funeral home.

Ferne LeIlla Hatch, daughter of Chris and Mary (Roberts) Peterson, was born Aug. 30, 1913, east of Rolfe. Ferne graduated from the Rolfe High School.

In July, 1933 she was united in marriage to Harold Bates in Pocahontas. To this union seven children were born. Ferne and Harold lived near Rolfe, then moved to Pocahontas County for a while before returning to Rolfe. They later moved to Plover. Harold passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital.

Ferne married Lester Hatch on Feb. 14, 1950, in Mallard. They lived on a farm close to Plover for a year and then moved to the Hatch farm northwest of Curlew. To this union two children were born.

Ferne was a homemaker and farmwife. In 1965 they moved to Emmetsburg. Ferne was employed at Severson Nursing Home and later Lakeside Lutheran Home as a nurse’s aid and then as a home health aid.

Ferne was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rolfe and the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Graettinger and Royal Neighbors.

Ferne passed away Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 97 years, 5 months and 13 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; companion, Ralph; five brothers; seven sisters; a son, Kenneth Bates; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

She is survived by her children, Lloyd (Bonnie) Bates of Maysville, MO, Luella (Bob) Williamson of Spencer, Jim (Shirley) Bates of Hot Springs, AR, Carol (Jerry) Sherman of Pella, Larry (Sharon) Bates of Britt, Harry Bates of Boise, ID, Sandi (Craig) Iwen of Emmetsburg and David (Diane) Hatch of Emmetsburg; 32 grandchildren; great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Bessie Heiter.
