Betty Mehan 1925-2011

Betty Mehan, the wife of the late Tommy Mehan, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Burial is St. John’s Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, at the Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

Betty was born Dec. 30, 1925, at Varina, the daughter of Van D. and Helen (Carmean) Holman. Betty attended school in Varina and Hartley.

Betty was united in marriage to Richard L. Campbell, and to this union three children were born. Richard passed away in 1980.

On June 8, 1984, Betty was united in marriage to Tommy Mehan. Betty and Tommy enjoyed traveling, attending sales and auctions around the state and spending time with their kids and grandkids.

Betty worked at Mileham’s and Gibson’s Produce, and she also had in-home daycare. She enjoyed watching her daycare kids grow up, and she attended all of their weddings. She loved to volunteer her time to different organizations.

Betty was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Judes and the U and I Birthday Club. She was a board member of the Palo Alto County and Spencer Northwest Iowa Aging Associations, and she was a lifetime member of the Historical Society.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dennis Campbell (Sharon) of Roscoe, IL, Vicki Buettner of Ayrshire, Carey Campbell (Barb) of Flagstaff, AZ, Pat Mehan (Kathy) of Emmetsburg, Joe Mehan (Mary) of Orlando, FL, Kevin Mehan (Kristin) of Eagle, CO, Ann Crosse (Steve) of Denver, CO, Mike Mehan (Shelly) of Fort Dodge, and Mary Hung (Isan) of Denver, CO; two sisters, Alice Gibbson (Richard) of North Carolina and Carol Anne Schlumbaum (Harlan) of Sioux City; a brother, Danny Holman of San Mateo, CA; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Betty Mehan was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Dick and Tommy; three brothers; one sister; step-son, John Mehan; brother and sister-in-law, James and Mary Evelyn Noonan; son-in-law, Jerry Buettner; and one granddaughter, Keegan Mehan.
