Michael J. Laughlin, Sr.
DES MOINES — Michael John “Mike” Laughlin, Sr., 66, died on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010, of stroke complications at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Iles Funeral Homes – Westover Chapel, located at 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines. Burial will take place on Tuesday at St. John’s Cemetery in Emmetsburg.
Mike was born Feb. 27, 1944, in Des Moines, the son of Maurice Thomas and Ivey May (Turley) Laughlin. He graduated from Dowling Catholic High School, Drake University and Drake Law School. He practiced law in Des Moines his entire career, most recently with Kuntz and Laughlin, P.C. Mike served in the Army Reserves and the Iowa National Guard, from which he retired.
He married Mary Canady Aug. 9, 1969, and they became parents of Robert Michael and Michael John, Jr. Mike’s passions were hunting, fishing, the outdoors and outdoor writing, Ducks Unlimited, coaching Little League, his grandchildren, Dowling football, crossword puzzles and his work.
He is survived by his sons Robert Laughlin of Des Moines and Michael Laughlin, Jr. and his wife Ruple of Rochester, MN; their mother Mary Laughlin of Des Moines; grandchildren Jack and Greenlee; brother Thomas (Mary) Laughlin of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Richard.
Mike’s dry wit and humor, intellect and generosity will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
