Christina Halstead 1916-2010

Funeral service for Christina Halstead of Emmetsburg was Saturday, Oct. 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. David A. Morris officiated.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Halstead died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at the Emmetsburg Care Center. She was 93.

Christina M. Neilson Halstead was born Dec. 21, 1916, in Cana Sask, Saskatchewan Providence, Canada, to Ella Mabel Yoakum Neilson and Benjamin Franklin Neilson. Christina grew up west of Ringsted. In 1934, she graduated from Emmetsburg High School.

Tina and Lyle Halstead were married Sept. 4, 1934, in Spencer. The couple made their home in Emmetsburg, except for a period of time in the 1960s when they had a dairy farm in the Deer Park, WI, area.

Tina was employed by the Emmetsburg School System in the food service department until her retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Church Circle in Emmetsburg.

Survivors include her sons, Lyle J. Halstead (Janet) of Waterloo and Frank Halstead (Pat) of Pocahontas, and her daughters, Lavonne Miller (Lloyd) of Adel, Catherine Shields (Don) of DeKalb,?IL, and Karen Schanon (Mike) of Amery, WI; grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Also surviving is a sister, Geraldine Bailey of Reno, NV; a nephew, Harold Loewenberg of Escondido, CA, and other nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Halstead was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; a son, Richard Dean; her parents; four sisters, Katie Loewenberg, Nellie Neilson, Grace Neilson and Mildred Austin; and three brothers, Frank, George and Walter Neilson.
