Christina Maxine Hoch
Christina Maxine Hoch was born on March 18, 1918, to Herman and Marie (Jensen) Blass at home near Superior. She attended Cylinder High School where she was active in sports and 4-H.
Maxine and Nicholas Hoch Sr. were married on April 25, 1939 in Whittemore. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1989. The couple farmed in the Cylinder area for 25 years before moving to Emmetsburg in 1972.
Maxine worked at St. Ann’s Hospital in Algona in the dietary division for seven and one-half years, and she worked at Lakeside Lutheran Home for 16 years before retiring in 1987. She also volunteered and cooked at the Multipurpose Senior Center in Emmetsburg and later enjoyed going to the center to eat lunch and play cards with friends.
She loved to play cards, playing: bridge, pinochle and 500 – taking part in tournaments whenever possible. She also enjoyed cribbage, rummy, checkers and playing other games with family and friends.
Maxine was a volunteer for the R.S.V.P. , and she received a Governor’s Volunteer award. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of the Americas for 60 years starting at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore and transferring to Holy Family Catholic in Emmetsburg when she moved.
Maxine was an excellent seamstress, sewing most of her clothes and her children’s clothes as they were growing up. She also loved to quilt, cook and bake – sharing and passing these talents on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a garden up until the time she moved to Willow Ridge and passed this skill on to her children. She instilled a good work ethic in her children along with giving them a strong moral foundation.
Maxine passed away on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 92 years, six months and seven days.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nick; sisters, Beulah and Elsie; brother, Hans; grandsons, Kyle and Kirk Schafer; and her great-granddaughter, Kaylin Hoch.
She is survived by her six children: Marilyn Neubauer and husband, Larry of Ardmore, OK, Nick and wife, Prudy of Cylinder, Rosemary Schafer of West Bend, Tom and wife, Carol of West Bend, Lois Hostettler and husband, John of Brandon, SD and Jim and wife, Hazel of Emmetsburg; sister, Irene Hunst of Fairfield Bay, AR; 19 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service for Maxine Hoch will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Emmetsburg.
Burial is in St. John’s Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
