Marjorie Gannon 1926-2010

Sep 14, 2010

Marjorie Kathryn Gannon (Marge), 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010 at the Emmetsburg Care Center in Emmetsburg.

Funeral service for Mrs. Gannon will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.

Private family interment will be on Sept. 15 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Pocahontas.

Marge was born April 23, 1926 to Martin and Kathryn Miller in Canova, SD. She graduated from high school in Alton and received her R.N. degree from St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City in 1947.

While working as a nurse in Storm Lake she met the love of her life, John Gannon. They were married on Aug. 16, 1950 at the St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD.

Marge continued her nursing career a few more years before focusing her love and attention on her family. Having lost both her parents at a young age, raising a close, loving family was very important to her.  Marge and John fulfilled that dream, raising six devoted children.

Left to cherish the memory of her life are her beloved husband of 60 years, John of Emmetsburg; children, Patricia and Doug Escue of Houston, TX, Michael and Maureen Gannon of Bellingham, WA, Kevin Gannon of Seattle, WA, Mary Kay and B.J. Larson of Arlington, WA, Donna and Kevin Connelly of Danville, CA, and Robert Gannon of Anchorage, AK; five grandchildren, Kelley and Michael Halvorson, Brad Escue, Mark Gannon, John Gannon, and Noah Larson; and two great grandsons, Colin and Spencer.

Marge is preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Kathryn Miller; her half brother Ronald Miller; and her aunt and uncle, Joseph and Lena Miller.

Her compassion for others continued through her volunteer work at the Palo Alto County Hospital and the American Red Cross, and as a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Marge lived out her last two years of earthly life at the Emmetsburg Care Center where she relished in the camaraderie and was comforted by the gentle care of the staff.

Donations in honor of Marge may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 3716, Sioux City, IA 51102-3716.
