WHITTEMORE — Funeral service for Mary Elbert is 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, July 22, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. Father Victor Ramaeker will officiate the funeral mass.

Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Whittemore. Oakcrest Funeral Services in Whittemore is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Elbert died Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City. She was 83.

Mary Catherine Elbert was born Oct. 20, 1926, on the family farm just west of Whittemore, the daughter of LeRoy and Kathleen (Walsh) Farrell. She grew up in Whittemore and attended school at Presentation Academy, graduating in 1944. After her schooling she went to work at the Prisoner of War Camp near Algona.

On Sept. 9, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to Edmund “Eddie” Elbert at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. After their marriage they lived in Des Moines where Mary worked for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The couple later moved to Renwick, before moving to Whittemore in February of 1954, after Eddie and his brother had purchased Elbert Chevrolet. Mary worked part time in the office at St. Michael’s Catholic School.

Mary loved to be with and entertain her family and friends and was known for her potato salad and ham gravy. She spent a lot of her time watching her grandchildren in their sporting events. Mary also enjoyed playing golf, cards and traveling.

She was a member of the Red Hat Ladies, Whittemore Betterment, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Michael Parish, St. Michael’s Rosary Society and she was a supporter of Bishop Garrigan High School.

Mary is survived by her children, Dan and Maureen Elbert and family of Whittemore; Mick and Patty Elbert and family of Algona; Ellen and Ron Meyer and family of Whittemore; Eileen and Chuck Bell and daughter of Algona; brothers and sisters, Kenny Farrell of Whittemore; Helen “Skip” Wirth of West Des Moines; Emy Farrell of Algona; Leo and Arddy Farrell of Jacksonville, FL; Tom and Joanne Farrell of Prairie City; an aunt, Helen Foley of Algona; sisters-in-law, Karen Farrell of Denver, CO; Coletta Mullin of Whittemore; Alma Abbas of Hailey, ID; Caroline Elbert of Whittemore and Millie Elbert of Algona and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eddie on March 10, 2007; and a brother, James Farrell.
