Hazel M. Johnston 1923-2010
RUTHVEN — Funeral service for Hazel M. Johnston of Ruthven is 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at the United Methodist Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Roger Maize will officiate.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge.
Visitation is Saturday, July 17, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Mrs. Johnston died Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer. She was 87.
Hazel Marie Johnston, daughter of Harry N. and Viola P. (Hoadley)?Rouse, was born March 9, 1923, in Ruthven. She received her education in Ruthven. Following high school graduation, Hazel attended Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, graduating in 1947. She worked for two years at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.
On June 3, 1949, Hazel and Stanley F. Johnston were married in Rembrandt. Hazel and Stan farmed near Sherburn, MN and Hazel was employed as a nurse at Trimont. After moving to Ruthven, Hazel was the Director of Nursing at Lakeside Lutheran Home and then she worked for many years at Emmetsburg Family Practice Clinic, retiring in 1998.
Hazel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ruthven and the Ruthven American Legion Auxiliary. She was also active in the Red Hat Society.
Surviving are a sister, Iona Dunklau of Emmetsburg; a brother, Marvin (Dorothy)?Rouse of Ruthven; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley in 1999; and a brother, Wayne Rouse.
