Esther J. Egland 1919-2010

Funeral service for Esther J. Egland of Emmetsburg was Tuesday, July 6, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Depew. The Rev. David Moore officiated.

Burial was in North St. John’s Cemetery, Depew. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home, Emmetsburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Esther Jeanette Egland, the daughter of Edward and Josie (Handeland)?Peterson, was born Nov. 16, 1919, near Delavan, MN. The family moved to a farm near Depew in 1920 and Esther received her education in Vernon Township country school in Palo Alto County.

On Feb. 19, 1940, Esther and Tillman Egland were married in Cylinder. They farmed northeast of Cylinder for three years and then purchased the Egland farm where they farmed for the next 43 years.

Esther moved to Emmetsburg in 1997, and in the last several months lived at Lakeside Lutheran Nursing Home in Emmetsburg. Esther passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church all her life, Esther held offices in the Women’s Circles and taught Sunday School. In 1992 she served as Historian for the 150th Anniversary of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was a member of Palo Alto County Women’s Farm Bureau and held the office of co-secretary at the county level for several years.

Esther is survived by two children, Tillford (Ella Rae) Egland of Cylinder and Donna Wagner of Ames; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Also surviving are a half-sister, Bertha (Jerald) Johnson of Ringsted; two half-brothers, Berger (Dorothy) Naig of Fairmont, MN and Silas Naig of Honolulu, HI; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Naig of Emmetsburg.

Mrs. Egland was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Dylan Blankenhagen; brothers, Pete Peterson and Marvin Peterson; sister, Clara Peterson; and half-brother, Joseph Naig. Step-father Bertel Naig also preceded her in death along with 11 step-brothers and sisters.
