Eileen Backstrom 1923-2010
Funeral service for Eileen E. Backstrom of Ayrshire was Saturday, May 22, at the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire. The Rev. Roger Maize officiated.
Burial was in Rush Lake Cemetery, Curlew. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Backstrom, 86, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Ruthven Community Care Center in Ruthven.
Eileen Ethel Backstrom, daughter of Stanley P. and Bertha (Long) Cox, was born July 27, 1923, in Ayrshire. She attended school in Ayrshire and graduated in 1940.
Eileen was employed at the Ayrshire grocery store before attending Emmetsburg Community College. She then taught in rural schools for two years.
In 1948 Eileen received a BA degree in Business Education from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught business classes at the high school level in several area schools, including Rolfe, Curlew, Mallard, Ayrshire, Havelock-Plover and Gillet Grove. After 30 years in education, Eileen retired in 1987.
On July 18, 1951, Eileen and Ronald Earl Backstrom were married in Ayrshire. Eileen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ayrshire.
Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Julie and Derrick?Johnson of Flower Mound, TX, and Jane and Dan?Culver of Algona; grandchildren, Brad Harson and his fiancé, Genna, Amanda Harson and her fiancé, Ryan, Laura and Tony Meyer, Brian Culver and Jacob Johnson; and four great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Shirley Larson of Viera, FL.
Mrs. Backstrom was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ronald; an infant brother; a brother, Emmett Cox; and a grandson, Jeff Harson.
