Louis J. Soenen 1927-2010

Funeral service for Louis J. Soenen of Emmetsburg was Monday, May 3, at Holy Family Parish Center in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Clem Currans officiated.

Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Soenen died Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. He was 82.

Louis Jerome Soenen was born July 12, 1927, in Marshall, MN, the son of Maurice and Martha (Noppe)?Soenen. He received his education in Marshall.

Louis was united in marriage to Georgette K. Laleman in Green Valley, MN.

Louis served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1951 until being honorably discharged in 1953. He received the rank of Corporal while serving in the military. Louis returned to Marshall, MN, following his military service, where he farmed until 1966.

In 1966, Louis and Georgette moved their family to Emmetsburg where he was part owner of Soenen Oil Company. In 1973, he left the oil company to work for Palo Alto County on the road department. He was employed with the road crew for 16 years, retiring in 1989.

Louis was a devoted member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Louis was a very dedicated member of VFW Post #2295.

Survivors include his wife, Georgette of Emmetsburg; children Ron Soenen (April) of Emmetsburg, Jim Soenen (Julie) of Emmetsburg and Linda Vosika (Mike) of Pocahontas; daughter-in-law Cindy Soenen of Emmetsburg; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Gerald Soenen (Florence) of Emmetsburg; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Louise Soenen of Marshall, MN, Lawrence and Josie Farasyn of Marshall, MN, Larry and Jean Haverkost of New Jersey and George and Rita Laleman of Cottonwood, MN.

Mr. Soenen was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Eli Soenen; and his son, Denny Soenen.
