Janell Christine Berkland Shain
Janell Christine Berkland Shain, age 55, of Omaha, NE, died Friday, March 26, 2010, after a courageous battle against cancer.
Funeral service was Wednesday, March 31, at Lutheran Church of the Master, Omaha, NE.
Janell, the daughter of Ervin and Marguerite Berkland, was born July 23, 1954, in Emmetsburg. She attended elementary school in Cylinder and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1972. Janell received her Bachelor of Science degree in child development from Iowa State University and earned her master’s degree in special education from the University of Nebraska.
Janell was a long time educator and early childhood advocate. In August 1999, she was hired as Ralston School District principal in the Wildewood Elementary School. She was also certified as a High Scope trainer in pre-school training, served as a national field consultant and was a member of the board of directors of High Scope.
She is survived by her husband, Michael; children, Keeli (Erik Scott) Nelson, Brandon Nelson and Jillayne Nelson; step children Melissa (Craig) Hurley and Michele (Tony)?Clair; four grandchildren, Evan, Sydney, Casey and Drew; sisters and brothers, Marlys (Ed)?Maahs, Mervin (Patti)?Berkland, Richard (Diana)?Berkland, Diana (Doug)?Pals, Bonnie (Vaughn) Saxton, Keith (Margaret)?Berkland and Colleen (Byron)?Petzenhauser; sister-in-law Barb Berkland; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all.
Janell was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Larry Berkland.
