Howard Johnson 1927-2010

RUTHVEN — Howard M. Johnson of Ruthven died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at the Ruthven Community Care Center. He was 83.

Funeral service for Mr. Johnson was Saturday, April 3, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home, Ruthven, was in charge of arrangements.

Howard Melvin Johnson was born Feb. 10, 1927, near Bode, the son of Melvin and Blanche (Schmidt) Johnson. He graduated from Bode High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy. Howard returned to farm with his father near Bode.

In 1947, Howard Johnson and Lois J. Cameron were married at Bode. Howard and his parents built the roller rink in Humboldt. Howard worked as floor manager for many years.

In 1955 Howard purchased his farm near Ruthven. He also had an excavation business.

In 1972, Howard Johnson and Cherry (Kensler)?Martin were married. Howard owned and operated Johnson’s Gun Clinic from 1973 to 1978. The couple later moved to California and returned to Ruthven in 1987.

Howard was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. He was an active member of Ruthven American Legion Post #33 and VFW?Post #2295 in Emmetsburg. He served as township assessor, and he worked at the Clay County Fair for 41 years.

Survivors include his children, Howard M. Johnson II (Sandra) of Ruthven, and Deborah K. Feldman (Richard) of Ruthven; five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents and his wives.
