Richard Miller 1921-2010

Funeral service for Richard Miller of Emmetsburg is 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Steve Ellerbusch will officiate.

Burial will be in South Walnut Cemetery, Graettinger. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge.

Visitation is Friday, Feb. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Emmetsburg.

Mr. Miller died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. He was 88.

Richard Miller was born July 3, 1921, in St. Peter, MN, the son of Peter and Dagmar Rebecca (Anderson)?Miller. He attended country school and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1939.

Dick served in the U.S. Army, serving one year in Okinawa during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart during his time of service.

On Sept. 25, 1940, Dick Miller and Martha Hansen were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

In 1946, at age 24, Dick was elected as County Sheriff, making him the youngest sheriff ever in the state of Iowa. He served in this capacity for 26 years. Dick owned and operated Miller Insurance and Real Estate until his retirement.

Dick was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. He was a member of VFW Post #2295 and the American Legion for over 60 years. He had served as past president of the Iowa Sheriff’s Association.

Dick was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and he enjoyed bowling. What he enjoyed most in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dick will be remembered by them as their “Funny Grandpa” as he always had a positive spirit, lots of laughs and a twinkle in his eye.

Survivors include his wife, Martha of Emmetsburg; children, Ron Miller of Long Boat Key, FL, Lorraine (David)?Naig of Emmetsburg, Sandi (Ron)?Chapman of Emmetsburg, Gregory (Ardella)?Miller of Nauvoo, IL, and Richard (Sheila)?Miller of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Lavonne Jonson of Eyota, MN; and sister-in-law, Betty Miller of Emmetsburg.

Richard Miller was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, LeRoy, Ervin, Carman and Martin Miller; and a sister, Florence Wichman.
