Delmar Damstrom 1921-2009

Funeral service for Delmar Damstrom of Emmetsburg is 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Bethany?Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Steve Ellerbusch will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge.

Mr. Damstrom died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg. He was 88.

Delmar Damstrom was born June 23, 1921, in Emmetsburg, the son of Albert E. and Belle (Reynolds)?Damstrom. He attended the Iowa School of the Deaf in Council Bluffs from 1927 to 1941. Delmar returned to Emmetsburg where he lived with his parents and brother until their deaths.

Delmar worked for John Hammes Shoe Repair from 1942 to 1952. He then worked at Potter’s Grocery Store, Red Owl Grocery Store, and later at Joyce’s Grocery Store.

After his retirement, Delmar enjoyed his daily coffee breaks at McNally’s Bakery every morning and at Jenvold’s Ford Garage in the afternoon. He was always out and about, checking on everyone and everything that was going on around town, and he didn’t miss much. He was well known in the community and he knew almost everyone. He was known for a great sense of humor. Until a few years ago he could be seen riding his bicycle all around town. Delmar was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. His greatest pleasure was his family and friends.

Surviving are sisters-in-law, Ruth Damstrom of Emmetsburg and Helen Damstrom of Spencer; brother-in-law, Leonard Bergeson of Ruthven; and nieces and nephews: Richard (Kay)?Bradley of Pacific, WA, Gerrie Lowman of Emmetsburg, Dwayne (Mary) Bradley of Beeville, TX, ?John Bradley of Bonners Ferry, ID, Wendy Driver of Egtero, FL, Helen Olson of Elba, MN, Carolyn (Eric)?Smith of Emmetsburg, Pat Bradley of Tacoma, WA, Virginia Roberts of Dovary, MN, Frances (Lloyd) Simons of Jonesboro, AR, Bea (Dale)?Poeppe of Emmetsburg, Doreen (Dave)?Bush of Spencer, Mary Catherine Damstrom of Des Moines, Herb (Maria)?Damstrom of Bondurant, David Damstrom of Washington, and Janis (Mark)?Heifner of Appleton, WI.

Mr. Damstrom was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Geraldine Bradley and Dorothy Bergeson; three brothers, Emil, Herb and his twin brother, Darvan; and a nephew, Dennis Bergeson.
