T. Richard Barber 1919-2009
RUTHVEN — Thomas Richard “Rich” Barber died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, in Spencer.
Funeral service for Mr. Barber is 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. Concelebrants are Rev. Peter Nguyen and Rev. Roger Linan.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Ruthven, with Military graveside rites by American Legion Post 33. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home is in charge of arrangments.
Thomas Richard “Rich” Barber was born Feb. 23, 1919 on the family farm at Rodman. He graduated from Rodman High School in 1937 and attended Waldorf Junior College. He taught in Armolds Park from 1939 to 1941 before serving in the U.S. Army in Europe.
After returning from the war, Rich taught in Rodman before marrying Jeanette Murphy of Emmetsburg on June 14, 1950. The couple moved to Iowa City while Rich attended the University of Iowa, and moved to Ruthven in 1952, Rich served as an educator and coach for 33 years and the couple raised seven children. He also taught and coached at Emmetsburg before retiring in 1982.
Surviving are his children: Pat Custer (John) of Indianapolis, IN; Tom and Kathy of Aberdeen, SD; Marcia Hockett (Tom) of Fort Worth, TX; Mike and Angela of Argyle, TX; Duane and Robin of Spencer; Roger and Sara of Chicago, IL and Sara Jakuc(Steve) of Denver’ CO; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
