Miriam A. Frieden 1918-2009

WEST BEND — Miriam A. Frieden, 90, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at the West Bend Care Center following a series of health complications.

Funeral service for Mrs. Frieden is 10 a.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Apostolic Christian Church in West Bend. Officiating are Rex Frieden, Wayne Grimm, Duane Metzger and Pat Zaugg.

Burial is in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery, West Bend. The Harris Funeral Home in West Bend is in charge of arrangements.

Miriam Anna (Banwart) Frieden was born Nov. 10, 1918, in West Bend. Miriam is the fourth of 13 children born to Paul Banwart Sr. and Elizabeth Benninger Banwart. She grew up on a farm near West Bend and graduated from West Bend High School in 1936.

On May 4, 1940, Miriam and Ray Frieden were married. They lived in Lamar, MO, and Elgin, IL before moving to a farm near West Bend.

Ray Frieden died Jan. 3, 1969. That year, at age 50, Miriam decided to enter nurses training at Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo where she excelled and graduated in 1970. She served as a practical nurse at Humboldt County Hospital.

In 1972 Miriam was married to George Frieden, brother of her late husband. They moved to his country home near Lamar, MO. George died Jan. 1, 1975.

Miriam returned to West Bend in 1980 where she was active in community affairs, including the West Bend Historical Society and Beta Sigma Phi service sorority. She attended the Apostolic Christian Church.

In 2005, Miriam moved to a retirement home in Ankeny, near her daughter Nancy. As her health declined, she moved to the West Bend Care Center in August 2009, where she was surrounded by family and friends.

Surviving are three children, Jimmy Jay of Ruthven, Terry (Nora)?of Alexandria, VA, and Nancy Pedersen of Ankeny; five grandchildren, Jimmy Jay II of Waltham, MA and Jaron Frieden of Burlington, MA; Anna Pedersen of St. Paul, MN; Thomas and Kathryn Frieden of Alexandria, VA; and three great grandchildren, Jack, Cole and Kaylee Frieden of Burlington, MA.

Also surviving are three brothers:?Edwin (Ada)?Banwart of Mediapolis, Paul (Emmy)?Banwart Jr. of Casa Grande, AZ, and Robert (Kay) Banwart of West Bend; four sisters, Leona Wulf of Sabetha, KS, Lela Banwart of West Bend, Alice Metzger of Alvord and Estellyn Metzger of Lester; sisters-in-law Madeline Banwart of West Bend, Esther Banwart of Morton, IL, and Betty Banwart of West Bend.

Miriam was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ray and George; a sister, Clara Anliker; and brothers, Arthur Banwart, Elmer Banwart, Arnold Banwart and B.L. (Benjy) Banwart.
