Friedrich W. Lenz 1911-2009

Funeral service for Fred Lenz of Emmetsburg is 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Nicholas Thackery will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation is Friday, Aug. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Lenz died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg. He was 98.

Friedrich Wilhelm Lenz, the son of Adolf and Florentina (Richter)?Lenz, was born March 30, 1911, in Germany. On July 31, 1922, the family immigrated to the Cylinder area where they farmed. Fred received his education from the Cylinder Community School, and he also attended school in Rodman and Whittemore.

On Oct. 15, 1933, Fred and Oliva Olson were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottosen. Mr. Lenz was a lifelong Palo Alto County resident, farming in the Rodman and Laurens areas. He retired in 1982 and the family moved to Emmetsburg. Mrs. Lenz passed away June 8, 1999, and Fred continued to maintain his home.

On July 19, 2003, Fred and Viola Dau were married at St. Paul’s in Whittemore. Viola passed away in May 2008. In May 2009, Fred moved to Lakeside Lutheran Home where he resided until his death.

Fred was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg where he served as a member of the church council. He was on the Senior Citizens board locally and the advisory board at the district level. Fred was active on the Creamery Board, was chairman of the Mallard Trinity Lutheran Church Council while building the new church, and was president of the congregation and Sunday School Superintendent for 13 years. Mr. Lenz was very active in A.R.C. (Association for Retarded Citizens) and was responsible for hiring its first teacher. He was on the Foundation Board at Lakeside Lutheran and also served as a volunteer.

Survivors include his daughter, Caroline (Roger)?Kalkis of Naperville, IL; sons, Fredrick (Beverly)?Lenz of St. James, MN, James (Mary)?Lenz of Indianapolis, IN, and Kenneth (Kathy)?Lenz of Waseca, MN; 22 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and nine great, great grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Chapman of Emmetsburg; brother, Paul (Ruth)?Dietrich of Emmetsburg; daughter-in-law, Helen Lenz of Greensboro, NC; stepson, Lee (Pat)?Dau; and stepdaughter, Shirley (Richard)?Kirchner.

Mr. Lenz is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Oliva; his second wife, Viola; sons, Lawrence and Leonard Lenz; brothers, Carl, Ernest, Walter and Edward Lenz; and grandchildren, Michelle Lenz and Daniel A. Lenz.
