Frances Myklestad 1922-2009
MASON?CITY — A memorial service for Frances Myklestad of Mason City was held Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel in Mason City. Rev Jim Maglessen of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City officiated.
Inurnment was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. The family suggests memorials be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in Frances’ memory.
Frances Alice Myklestad was born Jan. 28, 1922 at home on the farm near Emmetsburg, the daughter of Fred and Anna (Jamne)?Quam. She graduated from Emmetsburg High School and received a teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers’ College. She then taught in a one-room country school near Emmetsburg.
Frances met and married Richard Eckert, who farmed with his family near Mallard. Richard left to fight in World War II in Europe and was killed in action. She was then united in marriage to Allen Myklestad on Feb. 6, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Allen preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 2005.
Frances worked several retail jobs and in 1960, went to work at the new Sears store. There she became known as “That Lady at Sears” and retired in 1985.
Frances enjoyed her family, and especially family gatherings on holidays and family vacations. Her family dedication and love showed in the care she gave to Allen during his battle with Parkinson’s disease.
She enjoyed sewing, ceramics and Tole painting. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. Frances died Friday, July 31,2009, at the I.O.O.F. home in Mason City.
She is survived by her children: Karen (John) Brockett of McKinney, TX; Jim (Mary) Myklestad of Mason City; and Linda Myklestad of Ft. Collins, CO; five grandchildren; Laurie (Mark) Tezak of Des Moines, Kristine (Richard) Mays of Richmond, VA, Lisa (Matthew)?Johnson of Falls Church, VA, Jamie Hartfelder of Austin, TX and Jess (Tammie)?Mykle of Ft. Collins, CO; three great-grandchildren; Madeline and Meredith Johnson and Brandon Wellborn; three sisters: Anetha Kelly of Emmetsburg, Doris (Jim) Frost of Pewaukee, WI and Dorothy (Jerry) Sucre of New Port Richey, FL and a brother, Don (Shirley)?Quam of Walnut Creek, CA., as well as many extended family members and friends.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands: Richard Eckert and Allen Myklestad, a granddaughter; Kathryn Wellborn, a sister; Lillian Anderson, and two brothers; Stanley and Norman Quam.
