Vera M. Rice 1910-2009

Funeral service for Vera M. Rice of Emmetsburg was Monday, July 13, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Steve Ellerbusch officiated.

Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rice died Friday, July 10, 2009, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg. She was 98.

Vera Mae Rice, daughter of Silas and Ida C. (Nelson)?Sampson, was born Sept. 23, 1910, in Palo Alto County, near Emmetsburg. She received her education in Emmetsburg, graduating in 1928. Vera attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught country school in Palo Alto County until 1946.

On Nov. 21, 1945, Vera and Lawrence Rice were married in Emmetsburg. Vera helped on the farm and did a lot of gardening. She also worked at Hy-Line Hatchery for a number of years.

Vera was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg where she was active in Church Circle. She also taught Sunday School for many years. Vera was a member of the Ruthven American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her children:?William (Debra)?Rice of Tomah, WI, and Linda (Robert)?Petrilli of Highland Mills, NY; five grandchildren, Stacy (Danny) Garcia, Katie (Steve)?Stoczynski, Jennifer Rice, Nicholas Petrilli and Greg Petrilli; four great grandchildren, Marcella Garcia, Kylie Garcia, Abigail Stoczynski and Carter Stoczynski; and a sister, Helen Glaspie of Cedar Rapids.

Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
