Charles J. Peterson 1933-2009
LAUREL, MD — Charles (Charlie)?John Peterson of Laurel, MD, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at his home. He was 75.
Funeral service for Mr. Peterson was Tuesday, June 16, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Laurel, MD. The Rev. Tom and Connie Miller presided. Fleck Funeral Home, Laurel, MD, was in charge of arrangements.
Charles John Peterson was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Faribault, MN, to Dorothy (Turner) and Jack G. Peterson. He attended high school in Owatonna, MN. In 1956, he graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. In the 1970s he received a master’s degree in public administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL, and was a doctoral candidate in history at the University of Chicago.
After graduation from St. Olaf College, Charlie joined the U.S. Army and received training at Ft. Holabird, MD, and the Army Language School where he studied Serbo Croatian. In 1958 he married Lanny Helgen. His Army duties took them to Wuertzburg, Germany.
After his military discharge, Charlie took a job as a Department of the Army Civilian. He worked in the field of military intelligence during the Cold War. His duties took the family to Verona, Italy, Munich, Germany, Ft. Sheridan, IL, Frankfurt, Germany, Ft. Meade, MD, and Heidelberg, Germany.
Career awards included the Commanders Award for Civilian Service, Department of the Army Decoration for Meritorious Civilian Service, and Department of the Army Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service.
In 1989 Charlie retired from government service and returned to Laurel, MD. After leaving the regular Army, he had joined the Army reserves in 1962 and retired as a reserve Lt. Colonel after over 20 years of service.
His boyhood interest in stamp collecting led to involvement in philately on an international level. He held offices in several philatelic organizations. Charlie was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Laurel, MD. He participated in many community activities, including volunteer teacher, tutor and financial auditor.
Survivors include his wife, Lanny of Laurel, MD and Emmetsburg; children, Julie Brigham of Smithsburg, MD, John Peterson and wife Aida Lebbos of Ellicott City, MD, and Constance Uthoff of Ellicott City, MD; and seven grandchildren.
Also surviving are sisters Cheryl Burris of Carnation, WA, and Nadine DeMars of Faribault, MN; and brother Bruce Peterson of Faribault, MN.
Mr. Peterson was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Charles O. Peterson.
