Harold E. Varcoe 1918-2009

Funeral service for Harold E. Varcoe of Emmetsburg is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. David A. Morris will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Varcoe died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at the Emmetsburg Care Center. He was 91.

Harold Edgar Varcoe, son of George Robert and Vesta Jane (Barker)?Varcoe, was born Jan. 24, 1918, in Emmetsburg. He attended Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1937. Harold was inducted into the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Nov. 22, 1947, Harold Varcoe and Arlene B. Lanus were married in Minburn. Harold was employed at Varcoe Building Supply in Emmetsburg. He later owned and operated the Tip Top Linoleum Shop. Harold also worked at Wehrspann’s in Emmetsburg.

Harold was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. He served as a Boy Scout leader for several years and he and Arlene were members of the Five Islanders Camping Club. Harold was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg. He was also a member of the Isaac Walton League, the NCHA, and the men’s coffee club.

Survivors include his children, John (Becky)?Varcoe of Estherville, and Carol (Dean)?Simonsen of Emmetsburg; nine grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter.

Also surviving are two brothers, Richard Varcoe of Leesburg, FL and Burton (Arlene) Varcoe of Emmetsburg; and a sister, Bonnie M. Bickell of Tucson, AZ.

Mr. Varcoe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene; two sisters, Vesta Varcoe and Vivian Wilson; and three brothers, George Varcoe, Ellis Varcoe and Fred Varcoe.
