Francis Heidecker 1914-2009
GRAETTINGER — Funeral service for Francis R. Heidecker of Graettinger is 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Bethel Lutheran church in Graettinger. Pastor Barbara Jewell will officiate.
Burial will be at St. Paul’s of South Walnut Cemetery, Graettinger. The Henry-Olson Funeral Home in Graettinger is in charge.
Visitation is one hour prior to the service at Bethel Lutheran Church, Graettinger.
Francis R. “Dutch” Heidecker, of Deephaven, MN and Estherville, the youngest son of Charles E. and Hilda (Kasa) Heidecker, was born April 16, 1914, in Wallingford. He died Feb. 6, 2009, at the age of 94, at home.
Francis was confirmed in the Wallingford Lutheran Church and was a member of Graettinger Bethel Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir and served on the church board for many years.
Francis received his early education in the Wallingford School and then graduated from Estherville High School in 1931. As a boy, he worked for farmers in the surrounding area and later as a service station attendant for Chet Torreson in Wallingford.
He ran a successful oil delivery company and service station in Graettinger for over 30 years. Heidecker’s DX Service Station, delivered oil, diesel, gasoline, white gas and kerosene to many of the neighboring farms and companies in the area.
Francis served on several community boards, some of those were: the Municipal Light Plant for 22 years, the River Valley Telephone for 17 years, the Graettinger Fire Department for 30 years and the Graettinger School Board. He also was a contributing member of Thrivent Capital.
Francis loved hunting, fishing and camping with his family on fishing trips. He spent many hours bird watching and was an avid golfer with a better than average handicap. He also loved singing and dancing to the music from the Big Band Era.
Francis was married twice; first on March 4, 1935, to Irene T. Westergard in Fairmont, MN. They had two children, Sally and Alan. The couple was married for 42 years until Irene’s death on March 7, 1977. Francis married a high school friend, Eloise (Burt) Larsen, from Estherville at her lake front home in Spirit Lake on July 27, 1989.
In 2006, the Heidecker’s moved from Estherville to Deephaven, MN. They resided on Lake Minnetonka, at the home of Eloise’s granddaughter, Andrea and her husband Colin Chisholm and their son, Colin.
Francis is survived by his second wife Eloise; a sister, Pearl (Mrs. Bud) Spaulding, who resides at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville; a daughter Irene (Sally) Berryhill and husband Robert; a son Alan and wife Barbara; stepdaughter, Lynne Larsen and her children, Andrea and Eric and their spouses, Colin and Janette. His grandchildren, Debra Walter and husband Steve, Julia Loquai and husband James, Robert Scott Berryhill, Daron Heidecker and wife Carol, Chad Heidecker and wife, Angela, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be directed to the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
