Mary L. Paulson 1941-2009
Mary L. Paulson, daughter of Lyle Askeland and Fern Marie (Gaarde) Askeland was born Oct. 7, 1941 in Iowa City and passed from this life Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines at 67 years of age.
Mary graduated from Armstrong High School and received her Associates of Science Degree in Health Care Administration from Iowa Lakes Community College. She was united in marriage to Gunder Ernest Paulson Jr. “Ernie” on Nov. 8, 1957 in Armstrong.
Mary enjoyed gardening, golfing, camping, traveling and being outdoors. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics crocheting and always enjoyed repainting the rooms of her home. She enjoyed being involved with family, especially her grandchildren.
Mary was a Blue Bird leader and Campfire Girls leader for her daughters. She enjoyed people, working with Ernie as they managed rental properties in Des Moines and operated a shuttle service in Branson, MO, for over ten years.
The couple moved to a farm near Osceola in May of 2006 and Mary worked for Wal-Mart. She was a member of the Medora United Methodist Church and the Medora Ladies Aide.
Those relatives who preceded Mary in death were her parents and son Gunder Ernest Paulson III.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Ernie; daughter, Darla Stewart and husband Ronald of Freemont, NE; daughter, Coleen Johnson and husband Mark of Vancouver, WA; daughter, Marsha Duhn of Emmetsburg; daughter, Debbie Heck and husband Gary of Eden Prairie, MN; son, Dan Paulson and wife Julie of Fairfield Bay, AR; 16 grandchildren, Diane, Donnie, Debbie, Ronnie, Erin, Dennie, Val, Kiersten, Rachel, Aubrey, Jenny, Mervin, Cathy, Joshua, Caitlynn and Abbigail; and eight great grandchildren, Lillian, Collin, Grace, Lucas, Isabelle, Sammy, Bryce and Brady.
Also surviving are sisters, Elizabeth Rush and husband Pete of White Bearlake, MN, and Marlene Gunderson and husband Jerry of Columbia City, IN; a brother, Merlyn Askeland and wife Joann of Sanborn; as well as other relatives and many friends.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at the Medora United Methodist Church in Medora, IA, with Rev. Jerry Kramer officiating.
Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola.
Memorial services will also be on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 10 a.m. at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong.
