Arlene B. Varcoe 1927-2009

Funeral service for Arlene B. Varcoe of Emmetsburg was Saturday, Jan. 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. David A. Morris officiated.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge.

Mrs. Varcoe died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at the Emmetsburg Care Center. She was 81.

Arlene Bernadine Patricia Varcoe was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Havelock, the daughter of Arthur and Ida Irene (Krause)?Lanus. She received her education in the Pocahontas County Schools.

On Nov. 22, 1947, Arlene and Harold Varcoe were married in Minburn, IA.

Arlene was employed at the Rainbow Café and then she helped Harold in the Tip Top Linoleum Shop. She later became a nurse’s aid and worked at the Lakeview Nursing Home and at Palo Alto County Hospital, where she was also a ward clerk.

Arlene was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg where she was active in church circle. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the ladies organization of the Isaac Walton League. She had also served as a Cub Scout and Blue Birds leader for several years. Arlene received state recognition for being Volunteer of the Year for all of her years of service volunteering to various organizations. Arlene and Harold were members of the Five Island Campers group as well as the National Hiking and Camping Association.

She is survived by her husband, Harold, of Emmetsburg; her children, John (Becky)?Varcoe of Estherville and Carol (Dean)?Simonsen of Emmetsburg; nine grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter. Also surviving are three brothers, Leonard Lanus of Bradgate, Roy Lanus of Humboldt and Donald Lanus of Algona; and a sister, Eleanor Horan of Fort Dodge.

Mrs. Varcoe was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Clarence and Carl Lanus.
