Clifford Hughes 1921-2008
Clifford T. Hughes of Emmetsburg died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg. He was 87.
Memorial service for Mr. Hughes was Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. The Rev. David Morris, First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg, officiated.
Inurnment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg.
Clifford Thomas Hughes was born March 10, 1921, near Linn Grove, IA, the son of Owen and Marie (Libby) Hughes. He graduated from Sioux Rapids Consolidated School in 1938. Following graduation, Cliff farmed until 1941 when he enlisted into the U.S. Army. He earned the rank of Technical Sergeant (E-6).
On June 1, 1945, Cliff Hughes and Jeanette Newton were married in Sioux Rapids. After serving overseas, Cliff stayed in the Army Reserve and held several positions of command, ending his career as Division Provost Marshall of the 103rd Infantry Division with the rank of Major.
Following his time in the service, Cliff was employed for one year as office manager for Jerry Jordan’s Used Cars. He later joined the firm at Charles S. Fail Trimming Supply Company where he worked until 1954 when he purchased the J.G. Fogerty Insurance Agency in Mallard. He later moved the business to Emmetsburg where it became Hughes, Brennan and Wirtz Insurance. Cliff retired in 1981 and purchased a home in Sun City Center, FL, where he and Jeanette enjoyed many years.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette, of Emmetsburg; his children Donna (Jim) Wirtz of Emmetsburg, and Steven (Patricia) Hughes of Vicksburg, MS; five grandchildren, Nancy (Mark) Lindgren of Stanton, Scott (Heather) Wirtz of Emmetsburg, Jill (B.J.) Schany of Emmetsburg, Kimberly (Michael) Martin of Pearl, MS, and Kelsey Hughes of Houston, TX; and nine great grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Russell (Darline) Hughes of Everly, and a sister, Darlene Wise of Linn Grove.
Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Wolfe.
