Garth Cottington 1924-2008
SIOUX FALLS, SD — Garth Cottington, 84 of McAllen, TX, passed away on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at Southridge Health Care Center.
Garth Canning Cottington, son of Ferman and Addie (Canning) Cottington, was born on Oct. 16, 1924, in Gregory, SD. He attended country school in Iowa throughout the eighth grade and graduated from Silver Lake High School in Ayrshire, in 1942. He then attended Iowa State University until enlisting in the U.S. Navy Seabees in January of 1943 and later transferring to the U.S. Navy in 1945. He served aboard the U.S. Admiral Robert E. Koontz (AP122) a troop transport ship until being honorably discharged in May of 1946.
Garth returned stateside and was united in marriage with Vonica Yvonne Josifek on April 3, 1946. The couple farmed on the Cottington farm in Palo Alto County and began to raise a family. Garth also began work as a field assessor in Booth Township. The family moved to Guthrie Center in 1969, where Garth became the Guthrie County Assessor until retiring on Dec.31, 1986. After retirement, the couple spent winters in Mission, TX, at the El Valle Del Sol RV park until moving to the Heritage Village in McAllen, TX. In 1994, they moved to live in Texas year round where they remained until recently.
Garth was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mission, TX, past president of the Iowa Association of Assessors where he won many awards, a member of the Guthrie Center Lions Club, Guthrie Center Chamber of Commerce, and past member of the Guthrie County Farm Bureau. Garth was proud to be a 64 year lifetime member of the Leonard D. Wilson American Legion Post #174 in Ayrshire and was active in many areas.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Vonica, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter Connie (Gary) Colwill, Sioux Falls, SD; son Kirk (Elizabeth) Cottington, Cordova, TN; a brother, Gregory (Lois) Cottington, Beaumont, TX; a sister-in-law, Georgia Kassel, Ayrshire; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Garth was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter Melanie Noel Cottington; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Kassel.
