Karlene Hartsock 1933-2008
MALLARD — Funeral service for Karlene Hartsock of Curlew is 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the United Methodist Church in Mallard.
Burial is in Rush Lake Cemetery near Curlew. The Harris Funeral Home in Mallard is in charge.
In 2007, due to failing health, Karlene moved to Longhouse Residence in Spencer, where she died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at age 75.
Karlene Sue, daughter of Clarence “Jack” and Gladys (Diggs) Eppelsheimer, was born May 1, 1933, in Plover. Karlene graduated from Plover High School in 1951 and then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching degree. She began her teaching career in Gowrie, where she taught for one year.
On June 20, 1954, Karlene was united in marriage with David Hartsock in Plover. The couple lived in Waterloo for a year before moving to a farm near Havelock where they raised their family and spent the rest of their married lives. Karlene taught in schools in Havelock and Pocahontas.
David Hartsock died in 1977 and Karlene continued to live on the farm until her retirement. At that time she moved to Curlew where she eventually held the office of Mayor for a number of years. Karlene was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mallard, Church Circle, Choraliers and American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her children: Christi Hartsock (Mike Sherer) of Treynor, Todd Hartsock (Kim Schenk) of Swea City, Tony Hartsock of Parker, CO, and Melody Shugart of Rockwall, TX; grandchildren, Megan and Kayla Hartsock and Aaron Shugart; brother, Kenton Eppelsheimer (Pat) of Aurora, CO; and several nieces and nephews.
Karlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David; and an infant brother.
