Clarence Helgeson 1916-2008
Funeral service for Clarence T. Helgeson of Emmetsburg is 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Steve Ellerbusch will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. today, Thursday, at the funeral home.
Mr. Helgeson, 91, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2008.
Clarence T. Helgeson was born Nov. 27, 1916, and raised on a farm near Bode. He was the son of Carl and Anna (Tuftee) Helgeson. He attended Maple Lawn Consolidated Schools.
From an early age, Clarence farmed with his father. At age 21, he moved to Palo Alto County to start farming on his own.
On Sept. 15, 1940, Clarence Helgeson and Doris Jean Clark were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They set up farming northwest of Emmetsburg. Clarence continued farming and was a seed corn dealer for many years.
Clarence retired in 1977 and moved into Emmetsburg. He continued to be active on the farm.
Mr. Helgeson was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church where he served on numerous boards and committees. He also served on the board for Lakeside Lutheran Home. He was an active leader in 4-H and served on the board for Farm Bureau.
Surviving are his wife, Doris, of Emmetsburg; children: Paul (Judy) Helgeson of Boyceville, WI, Judy (Dick) Hughes of Omaha, NE, Nancy Helgeson of San Diego, CA, and Clayton (Shirleen) Helgeson of Emmetsburg.
Mr. Helgeson was preceded in death by a son, Steven; his parents; and five sisters, Carrie, Gertrude, Marguerite, Ruth and Thelma.
