Robert E. Thiel 1934-2008
Robert Eugene Thiel, 73, of Blue Grass passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Runge Mortuary Chapel.
Burial was at Blue Grass Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
Robert was born on Nov. 6, 1934 in Graettinger, the son of Clarence and Hazel (Long) Thiel. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1956. In 1959 he married Ellen Witham at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She preceded him in death in 2002.
Robert had farmed with his family before getting into construction work and truck driving. He was also a licensed boat pilot for several years, operating tugboats on the Mississippi River. In 1963 Robert joined the International Union of Operating Engineers where he operated heavy equipment until his retirement in 1989.
Robert and his wife enjoyed many activities over the years. Robert and Ellen had their air pilot’s licenses, owned their own plane, and enjoyed flying. He also enjoyed riding his Harley with his wife and watching old western movies. He loved to tinker around and had the ability to make, build or fix anything.
He was a member of Roosevelt Lodge # 626 AF&AM, KAABA Shriners, Blue Grass American Legion, ABATE, and Blue Grass Community Club.
Survivors include his daughter, Shana (Joe) Dahlhauser, Blue Grass; son, Randy (Debbie) Swanson, Manson; grandchildren, Devin and Damen Dahlhauser, Jeremy and Nicolas Swanson; great grandchildren, Madison and Kyler; sister, Margaret (Ray) Shryock, Estherville; brother, Richard Thiel, Emmetsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother, Roger.
