Russell Sampson 1922-2008

RUTHVEN — Funeral service for Russell Sampson of Terril is 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Ruthven.

Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home, Ruthven, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sampson, 86, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at his home near Terril.

Russell Sampson was born March 13, 1922, near Terril. He graduated from Lake Center High School and in 1940 joined the Army Air Corps. Russell completed Airplane Mechanic School as well as Flight Instructor training. He served as an Air Corps Pilot.

Russell remained active in the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1982 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was active in Iowa Flying Farmers and International Flying Farmers. Russell was named International Flying Farmer of the Year in 1989.

Surviving are his wife, Jane, of Terril; his children, David Sampson and his fiancé Brenda Mead of New Sharon, and Cynthia and Kurt Eisenmann of Waukesha, WI; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers.

Mr. Sampson was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard.
