Robert Neighbors 1927-2008

Robert E. Neighbors of Emmetsburg died Friday, June 27, 2008, at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. He was 81.

Funeral service for Mr. Neighbors was Monday, June 30, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Dennis Angland officiated.

Honorary bearers were Jack Mann and Ken Peterson.

Casket bearers were Lee Beem, Paul Dietrich, Roger Daum, Ted Hardman, Dick Zwart and LeRoy Walker.

Inurnment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Eugene Neighbors was born May 21, 1927, in Livonia, MO, the son of Hobart and Gladys (Wright) Neighbors. He attended elementary school in Missouri. His family moved to Grinnell where he finished high school and Bob attended Parson’s College in Fairfield.

Bob was drafted into the military and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned to continue his education, receiving a degree in education from Grinnell College. Bob later earned a Master’s Degree from Drake University in Des Moines.

In 1954 Bob was married to Madelon Hill in Grinnell. To this union a daughter, Linda Ann, was born. They made their home in eastern Iowa where Bob taught history and coached baseball and basketball at the high school level. After receiving his administrative endorsement, Bob served as high school principal at Bellevue High School. Madelon passed away in February 1964.

On July 2, 1966, Bob was married to Lois Stoehr in Potsdam, MN. They moved to Emmetsburg in 1967 where two children, a daughter, Andrea Sue, and a son, Steven Paul, were born. Bob was employed as the high school guidance counselor at Emmetsburg High School. He later worked at Emmetsburg Junior College, which consolidated with Estherville to become Iowa Lakes Community College. Bob served as Director of Financial Aid and Admissions for over 30 years before his retirement.

Bob was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg where he served on numerous boards and committees. He was also instrumental in the development of Kiwanis in Emmetsburg. In addition to these leadership positions, Bob served on the Planning and Zoning Committee for the city of Emmetsburg and he was a member of the board for Kathleen’s Residential Care Facility in Emmetsburg.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Emmetsburg; his children, Dr. Linda (Daniel) Landon of Jefferson City, MO; Andrea (Mark) Masek of Bellevue, NE; and Steven (Christina) Neighbors of Boston, MA; his grandchildren, Alexander Landon, Kailey and Tanner Masek, and Abigail and Logan Neighbors; his mother-in-law, Anna Stoehr; and a brother, Terry Neighbors.

Mr. Neighbors was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Madelon; and a brother, Howard.
