William J. Brown 1915-2008

RUTHVEN — Funeral service for William “Bill” Brown of Ruthven is 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. Concelebrants are the Rev. Peter Nguyen and the Rev. Tom Geelan.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Ruthven. Casket bearers are Tim Brown, Paul Feeman, John Brown, Jr., Mike Brown, Andy Brown, Dave Brown and Jim Brown, Jr.

Visitation is Friday, June 6, after 6 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven. A Parish Vigil Service is at 7 p.m.

Mr. Brown, 93, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Spencer Municipal Hospital.

Wiliam James Brown, son of W. J. and Mary G. (Donahue) Brown, was born May 13, 1915, on a farm northeast of Ruthven. He received his education in Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven High School in 1932.

In 1939, Bill moved to a farm seven miles southeast of Ruthven. After farming there for one year he purchased the farm.

On June 1, 1940, Bill Brown was united in marriage to Margie Thompson in Ruthven. The couple retired from farming in October 1977 and moved into Ruthven where they built their current home.

Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. He was a member of the Ruthven Coop Elevator Board and the Telephone Board.

Bill and Marge wintered in Mercedes, TX. They enjoyed their time there and loved having their family come to visit. Bill was an avid card player and especially enjoyed euchre, poker and pinnochle.

Surviving are his wife, Margie, of 68 years; his children, Colleen “Coke” Anderson of Sioux Rapids, Bill Brown, Jr., and his wife Connie of Ruthven, and Mary Hoefner and her husband, John of Glendale, AZ; son-in-law, Dennis Finnegan of Omaha, NE; grandchildren Angela, Jeanette, Sheena, Megan, Ryan, Josie, Jennie, Heather, Trisha, Erin and Todd; and 17 grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Rosemary Sneeringer of Seattle, WA; and three brothers, John J. Brown of Emmetsburg, Jim Brown of Omaha, NE, and Donald J. Brown of Des Moines.
