Oscar Berkland 1917-2008
Oscar Irven Berkland was born January 6, 1917, in Cylinder, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Clara (Benson) Berkland. He attended Independence Township country school, Cylinder High School, and he was a graduate of Fenton High School. Oscar joined the United States Navy where he served during WWII. He had the honor of being a member of the Navy Color Guard.
On February 20, 1946, Oscar was united in marriage to Ruth Lillevik at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. Oscar and Ruth began their lives together on a farm near Cylinder.
Oscar farmed and had a custom baling and hauling business. In 1961, they built their home in Cylinder. Oscar worked as a custodian for
Cylinder and Emmetsburg Schools before graduating from the Sioux City Barber College. He gave many cuts to his relatives and friends.
Oscar also worked at the bean plant and the Cylinder Lumber Company before retiring.
Oscar was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Depew. He will be fondly remembered for his story telling and hard work ethic. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to a neighbor, relative, or friend. Oscar was a kind man who loved his family dearly.
On May 29, 2008, Oscar passed away at the Lakeside Lutheran Home. He was 91.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruth of Cylinder; two sons: James and wife, Karen of Elk Grove, California and Robert and wife, Lucy Do of Lafayette, California; brother: Melvin Berkland and wife, Violet; sister, Eunice Purdy and husband, Dick; four grandchildren: Jaime and Ian Berkland of Lafayette, CA and Ana and Evan Berkland of Elk Grove, California; and a sister-in-law, Mary Agatha Berkland.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Ernest, Bert, Amos, Raymond, Clarence, and Bennie; and his sister: Ida Cody.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 3, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Depew. Burial is in North St. John’s Cemetery, Depew. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
