Otis Pieratt 1910-2008
Funeral service for former Emmetsburg resident Otis M. Pieratt is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. Gwenna Appel will officiate.
Burial will be in Rush Lake Cemetery, Curlew.
Visitation is Friday, April 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Mr. Pieratt died Thursday, March 27, 2008, in Mountain Grove, MO. He was 98.
Otis Milton Pieratt was born Jan. 6, 1910, in Hindsboro, IL, the son of Columbus “Lum” and Emma (Perry) Pieratt. The family moved to Laurens and Otis received his education in country schools of Palo Alto County and Laurens High School.
In 1936, Otis Pieratt and Helen Ruth Drown were married at the Drown residence near Curlew. The couple farmed in Palo Alto and Pocahontas Counties, then retired from the farm in Booth Township in 1977. The couple moved to Emmetsburg in 1985.
After Helen’s death, Otis was married to Vyonne Clark Backstrom in 2000. They made their home in Spencer.
Otis was a past member of the Prairie View Church near Curlew, the Christian Church in Laurens and the First United Methodist Church in Emmetsburg. He was currently a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. He was also a member of the Palo Alto County Farm Bureau and the Canter Club. Otis enjoyed horses. He broke horses to ride and to drive and in later years did his farming with a team. In 2006, Otis moved to Missouri to be close to his daughter.
Surviving are his children, William Pieratt of Prineville, OR and Carolyn Schrock of Mountain Grove, MO; his step children, Marilyn Moor of Spencer, Carol Hurley of Curlew, Jerry Backstrom of Spirit Lake and Shirley Eriksen of Webb; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also surviving is a sister, Mavis Wunder of Laurens.
Mr. Pieratt was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Helen and Vyonne; two brothers, Ray and Junior Pieratt; and a sister, Mildred Alborn.
