Kathy Geelan 1943-2008

RUTHVEN — Funeral service for Mary Kathleen Geelan of Ruthven is 10:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, March 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Tom Geelan and the Rev. Peter Nguyen are concelebrants.

Burial is in Calvary Cemetery, Ruthven. The Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven is in charge.

Mrs. Geelan died Thursday, March 6, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN, at the age of 64.

Mary Kathleen Geelan was born Nov. 14, 1943, in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Cyril and Beatrice (Behan) McGarry. The family moved back to Iowa when Kathy was a young girl. She received her education at St. Joseph High School in DeWitt, graduating in 1961. She attended Nurses Training at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rock Island, IL, where she received her R.N. Degree at the University of Illinois.

Kathy was employed as an R.N. in Milwaukee, WI, and at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

On Aug. 21, 1971, Kathy and Leo Francis Geelan were married in DeWitt. The couple made their home near Ruthven. Kathy worked at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg and at the Emmetsburg Clinic. She was most recently employed at the Family Practice Clinic in Graettinger.

Kathy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she taught C.C.D. for several years. She was a member of the Ladies Guild.

Survivors include her husband, Leo, of Ruthven; children, Martin “Marty” and Jessica of Ruthven, Beth and Mike Alesch of LaCrosse, WI, and Amy and Eric Schaben of Omaha, NE; and six grandchildren, Rachel, Tim, Connor and Braden Geelan, Josie Alesch and Nicholas Schaben.

Also surviving are two brothers, Joe and Beth McGarry of Penrose, CO and Dan and Sandi McGarry of Mankato, MN; and two sisters, Pat Penny of Colorado Springs, CO and Susie and Dave Lund of Milan, IL.

Mrs. Geelan was preceded in death by her parents.
