Gretchen Schmeling 1934-2008
Funeral service for Gretchen E. Schmeling of Emmetsburg was Monday, Feb. 25, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. The Rev. Judy DePue officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Emmets-burg.
Mrs. Schmeling, 73, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at her home near Emmetsburg.
Gretchen Elaine Schmeling was born July 29, 1934, in Langford, SD, the daughter of Henry and Myrtle (Langager) Meyer. She received her education in South Dakota and later moved to Iowa. Gretchen lived in Wall Lake and Lake View where she was employed at various restaurants in the area. She owned and operated the Beach Shack on Black Hawk Lake in Lake View.
In 1971 Gretchen and her children moved to Emmetsburg. Gretchen and Marlin Schmeling were married April 29, 1972.
Gretchen worked at the Family Table Restaurant in Emmetsburg for several years. She later worked at Sass’s in Ruthven.
Survivors include her husband, Marlin, of Emmetsburg; her children, Larry Meister of Richfield, MN, Greg (Janet) Meister of Coralville, and Kevin Meister of Union, MO; daughter-in-law, Jean Meister; and four grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Patricia Johnston of Omaha, NE.
Gretchen Schmeling was preceded in death by her mother and father; a sister, Janet Grote; a brother, Bob Meyer; and an infant grandson.
