Rosalinda Grethen 1917-2008

MALLARD — Rosalinda “Rosie” Grethen of Mallard died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at the Emmetsburg Care Center. She was 91.

Funeral service for Mrs. Grethen was Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Harris Funeral Home in Mallard was in charge of arrangements.

Rosalinda Grethen was born Jan. 5, 1917, in Mallard, the daughter of Frank and Kathryn (Neu) Schuller. She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Mallard Community High School in 1933.

She also attended and graduated from the Omaha Business College. Rosie worked as a secretary for Schuller’s Sand and Gravel and the Northwest Iowa Seven County Area Health Board.

On April 10, 1939, Rosie and Ralph Grethen were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mallard. The couple lived and farmed in the Mallard and West Bend area until their retirement in 1978 when they moved into town at Mallard.

Rosie was an avid letter writer with many pen pals. In 1981 she wrote her memoirs called “Pick’n My Brain.” She was chairperson for writing the Mallard 100 Year History Book.

Rosie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers Club, and the Bible Club. She served as a Eucharistic minister.

Rosie was a member of the Women’s Club, Garden Club, Palo Alto Cowbelles and Palo Alto Porkettes. She was a charter member of the Palo Alto County 4-H Foundation and she served on the Palo Alto Board of Health for 35 years. Rosie loved traveling, to all states and abroad. She loved sewing, making many quilts and afghans for friends and family. Most of all she loved to spend time with family and friends.

Survivors include her children: Shirley (Fred) Leuer of Longmont, CO, and Gaylen (Jann Henderson) Grethen of Mallard; seven grandchildren: Susan (Sharmon) Quam, San-dra (Scott) Petersen, Steven (Sue) Leuer, Scott (Rhonda) Leuer, Melinda (Marcello) Roman, Elia Grethen and Shelly (Ryan) Cavanaugh; 17 great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; a brother, Aloysius Schuller of Okoboji; and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Grethen was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, in 1981; her parents; sisters, Agnes Zatloukal and Dorothy Currans; and a brother, Dennis Schuller.
