Elaine Henningsen 1924-2008

RUTHVEN — Funeral service for Elaine L. Henningsen is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. The Rev. Kyle Anderson and the Rev. Luther Thoresen will officiate.

Burial will be in South Walnut Cemetery, Graettinger. Casket bearers are Mrs. Henningsen’s grandchildren.

Visitation is after 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven.

Elaine died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg at the age of 84.

Elaine LaVerne Henningsen, daughter of John and Venita (Hansen) Westergard, was born Jan. 8, 1924 at her maternal grandparents’ farmstead near Graettinger. She attended country school near Graettinger and graduated from Lake Center High School in 1942. Following graduation Elaine attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake where she received her teaching certificate. She returned to Palo Alto County where she taught country school.

On Aug. 9, 1949 Elaine was united in marriage to Kenneth N. Henningsen at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Graettinger. After her marriage Elaine quit teaching to be a full time farmwife and homemaker caring for her children.

As busy as she was with everyday tasks Elaine always found time for church and family. She kept a large garden and canned a lot of the fruits and vegetable which she harvested. She also raised chickens and had a large strawberry garden which she was proud of. Elaine did sewing and quilting for her family.

She was an active member of the Danish Lutheran Church of South Walnut Township teaching Sunday School and being active in Ladies Aid.She remained a member here until 1962 when they joined Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven where she, again was active in Ladies Aid and church circle, teaching Sunday School and Confirmation. She also was a member of Lakeside Lutheran Home Auxiliary where she volunteered.

Elaine is survived by her children, Cheryl Anderson and her husband, Rev. Kyle of Williston, ND, Charles Henningsen and his wife, Pat of Ruthven, Craig Henningsen and his wife, Janice of Ruthven, Cynthia Greifzu and her husband, Darrel of West Des Moines, Curtis Henningsen of Emmetsburg, and his fiancé Lorlen Ursal; 15 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Marlys Kiehl of Denver, CO, Margaret Dalen and her husband, Irvin of Graettinger, Donald Westergard and his wife, Delores of Graettinger, Richard Westergard and his wife, Janet of Graettinger, Edna Mett and her husband, Franklin of Wahpeton, Shirley Anderson and her husband, Don of Ruthven, Helen Sauders and her husband, Rex of Fond du Lac, WI, Lyle Westergard and his wife, Ardie of Milford, and Carol Reinders of Spirit Lake; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Wright and her husband, Bob of Emmetsburg, and Shirley Grimes of Marshall, MN; brother-in-law, Lloyd Simonson of Emmetsburg; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Elaine Henningsen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth in 1984; a sister and brother-in-law, Doris Peton and her husband, Donald; brothers-in-law, Lowell Kiehl and Clarence Grimes; and a sister-in-law, Alice Simonson.
