Glee Stokes 1913-2008

DES MOINES — Glee Stokes, 94, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Ramsey Village.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Highland Memory Gardens.

Glee was born on Sept.7, 1913, in Palo Alto County to Charles and Lena Sewell. She graduated from Emmetsburg High School and later moved to Des Moines, working in the accounting department at Sears-Roebuck.

Glee made beautiful afghans and was a steady companion on her husband’s fishing trips.

Glee is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jean Bohner, whose husband was a career Navy Pilot during WWII and served in the battle of Midway and Mrs. Dixie Mueller, both of Pensacola, FL and brother in law, Hank Cunningham of Des Moines.

Glee was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ellis; sister, June Cunningham and brother, Jack Sewell, a veteran of WWII, European Theatre of Operations. Both sisters, Dixie and June, served in the US Navy during WWII. June was a member of 1st Contingent of Des Moines that left for service training in the WAVES.
