What’s Happening At The Middle School

We launched a persuasive unit in 8th Grade Language Class. This was the first activity to practice making strong arguments using evidence. Before students met with their team, they each had to create their own evidence-based argument supporting their assigned side (defense or prosecution). Once the teacher OK’ed their initial argument, they were able to meet with their team/collaborate and create their script for the trial. During the Mock Trial, students had to look at evidence in a murder and present that evidence to determine if SpongeBob SquarePants was innocent or guilty. Judge Biery listened to arguments and decided the final outcome for each trial. All students really seemed to enjoy the process!

After learning the definition and words for 27 different land forms, the 6th graders had an opportunity to create their own continent. They started with drawing the continent on paper and identifying the landforms. They had to write a paragraph to show specific details about their continent, including the name of their continent. Students had to aim for including 15 different landforms into their continent. After they completed the creation on paper, students had an opportunity to use salt dough and actually create and paint their continent to present to their class.
