Life Saving Awards Presented to EPD Officers

Life Saving Awards were presented to Emmetsburg Police Sergeant Aaron Steffen and to Emmetsburg Police Chief Ryan Veldboom during the Emmetsburg City Council meeting Monday, April 26. Mayor Pat Degen presented the awards.

“This is a rare occurrence. We have two Life Saving Awards to present,” said Mayor Degen.

The Emmetsburg Police Department believes in the recognition of officers, their actions and outstanding efforts in service to the community and their fellow officers. In keeping with this belief, the City of Emmetsburg and Emmetsburg Police Department recognize Sergeant Aaron Steffen for his outstanding efforts that occurred in December 2020.

On Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, at approximately 9:21 p.m., the Emmetsburg Police and Palo Alto County Ambulance were dispatched to 2101 Broadway Street for an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, Sergeant Steffen immediately deployed an AED and started CPR. Sergeant Steffen’s actions revived the male prior to an ambulance arriving on scene. The male, James Knight III, was later transported to several hospitals to receive further medical treatment and recovery services.

Sergeant Steffen’s quick response, immediate actions and effective CPR resulted directly in saving the life of Mr. Knight.

Therefore, Sergeant Steffen’s actions qualify him for this Life Saving Award and bestows upon him the Department’s and the City’s appreciation.

The letter of commendation was signed by Chief Ryan Veldboom, Mayor Patrick Degen, and Administrator Kim Kibbie.

Sergeant Steffen’s career in law enforcement spans 16 years.

On Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020 at approximately 10:37 a.m., the Emmetsburg Police and Palo Alto County Ambulance were dispatched to 3501 Main Street for an unresponsive male. Upon arrival, Chief Veldboom immediately deployed an AED and started CPR. Chief Veldboom’s actions revived the male prior to an ambulance arriving on scene. The male, Jim Wolff, was later transported to several hospitals to receive further medical treatment and recovery services.

Chief Veldboom’s quick response, immediate actions and effective CPR resulted directly in saving the life of Mr. Wolff.

Therefore, Chief Veldboom’s actions quality him for this Life Saving Award and bestows upon him the Department’s and the City’s appreciation.

The letter of commendation was signed by Mayor Patrick Degen and Administrator Kim Kibbie.

Chief Veldboom has served in law enforcement for 20 years.
