Emmetsburg’s Matt Wirtz and West Bend-Mallard’s Donavon Hanson would each earn medals in their respective weight classes at the 2021 State Wrestling Championship in Des Moines last Thursday through Saturday. Wirtz, a junior at Emmetsburg High School, placed fifth at 195 pounds in Class 2A while Hanson, a senior at West Bend-Mallard, earned a fourth place overall finish in Class 1A, 113 pounds.

Emmetsburg would send four E-Hawk wrestlers to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, with senior Jordan Anderson, junior Wirtz, and sophomores Cade Shirk and Ryan Brennan all vying for a spot on the podium. While each grappler would fight hard throughout the state competition, it would be Wirtz earning top honors for the E-Hawks.

For West Bend-Mallard, Hanson would be the sole Wolverine representative, turning in a strong performance in Class 1A action to take home fourth place honors.
