The time for holiday shopping is here! Emmetsburg Shop Local retailers are providing a unique, one-day Holiday Pop -n- Shop event this Thursday, Nov. 19.

“People were asking, customers were asking, if we were going to do events,” said Erica Janssen, one of the event organizers. “I thought with COVID that people wouldn’t want to, but the community was interested in doing something. We started with the fall event and it went really well.”

Emmetsburg Shop Local started with a fall event, Autumn Spice. The event was well received by the public. During that October event, the group raised money for Breast Cancer. Those funds will be donated to Palo Alto County Hospital.

Holiday Pop -n- Shop is this Thursday, heralding in the holiday shopping season.

“People were going to have Open Houses anyway, so we are hosting one big night,” said Janssen. “Everybody is going to have a little Open House with a popcorn theme.”

Hughes HealthMart Pharmacy is the designated first stop to get popcorn. Since the Hoyman family has the theatre, Hughes Pharmacy is a good place to start the evening of shopping. Most of the participating businesses are going to offer things like M&Ms or red hots – things to put on popcorn.

“We kind of going with seasonally appropriate donations,” said Janssen. “Since we are getting close to Christmas we are accepting new and unwrapped toys. If you can’t do toys, we have donation boxes so you can drop in some cash and we will go and buy some toys.”

The donated toys will be donated through Upper Des Moines Opportunity for local kids in need. Cash donations will go toward the purchase of additional toys.

Shoppers will enjoy in-store specials during their one day Open House event. There are 24 businesses and vendors on the Holiday Pop -n- Shop circuit. Maps are available at each location, indicating hours (which will vary) and location. Toy donation sites are indicated by a teddy bear on the map, with other locations accepting cash donations.

Participating businesses include 1017 Market, a new Emmetsburg business; A Heavenly Celebration; The Archery Shop & Range; Blossoming Creations; Company Goods; The Cornerstone Pub & Grille; Crown Salon; DejaBrew, which will be host to Pampered Chef and Timeless Beads by Kathy Jo Kruse; Dockside Lounge at The Shores; new business, Free Spirit Nest; Hofstad Signs; Hughes HealthMart Pharmacy; Pizza Ranch; Second Image Boutique; St. Pat’s Irish Gifts, which will be host to Kay’s Krafts, Scentsy, and Zyia; Val’s Body Shoppe; another new business, Villa Nova Therapeutic Massage; The Willow Tree Garden Center; and, Woodford Equipment.
