ECSD Board Approves Superintendent Contract
by Joseph Schany
The Emmetsburg Community School District (ECSD) Board of Education met in a special session Wednesday morning in the Emmetsburg High School Library to discuss and approve ECSD Superintendent Darren Hanna’s contract renewal.
The terms of the proposed contract stipulate a salary of $138,00 for year one, $142,000 for year two, and $146,000 for year three, with an additional district contribution of $4,000 to a 403(b) tax-advantaged retirement savings plan.
School Board President Jane Hoyman addressed those in attendance, stating, “As you recall, we met in exempt session as allowed by law to discuss the superintendent contract renewal.” Hoyman then offered the floor to Board member Bill Huberty for a brief statement.
Huberty expressed his intent as a Board member, noting he serves on the Board for everyone and not just one particular group.
“I think that a good Board member has to be there for everybody. That means teachers, staff, students first and foremost, and superintendent as well. I just want everyone to know that I am in this for everyone. That is why I am here.”
Kathy Roethler, ECSD School Board Vice President, informed the room on the Policy & Education Committee meeting held the previous morning, at which Principal Tracie Christensen and Hanna discussed their educational plan.
“I was blown away,” said Roethler. “It’s a way we can improve our scores. It’s a way we can help our students be better prepared and it’s something different but it is something we’ve needed for a long, long time.”
The Board then approved the proposed contract, with one abstention from Katy Thomsen.
