Judicial Vacancy Announced

By Staff | Apr 19, 2018

Following an organizational meeting held on April 13, 2018, the Judicial Election District 3A Nominating Commission has established procedures for filling the vacancy resulting from the retirement of District Court Judge Patrick M. Carr in July of 2017.

The Commission has adopted a questionnaire to be completed by each person who wishes to apply for nomination to be a district judge. The questionnaire is in two parts. Copies of the questionnaire can be obtained from the district court administrator or from any Clerk of Court in Judicial District 3A. The application forms are also available on the court’s website at:

www.iowacourts.gov/District_Courts/District_Three/Current_Judicial_Openings/

The deadline for filing applications is April 30, 2018, at 4:30 p.m.

Each applicant will be given an opportunity to appear before the entire commission for a personal interview at the Clay County Courthouse, District Courtroom, in Spencer, Iowa on May 11, 2018, commencing at 8:00 a.m. that day. Interviews are open to the public.

After the interviews are completed, the commission will enter closed session for deliberations and voting; following which the commission will submit the names of two (2) nominees to Governor Kim Reynolds. Governor Reynolds will then appoint one (1) of the nominees to be a district judge.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must be members of the bar of Iowa, residents of the Judicial District 3A at the time they apply, and of such age that they will be able to serve an initial and one regular term of office before reaching the age of seventy-two years.
