2018 Miss Shamrock Contestants Announced
The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration takes it’s first official steps this Sunday afternoon with the annual Miss Shamrock Pageant, which will take place Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. The pageant will be held in conjunction with the Little Miss Shamrock pageants in the Emmetsburg High School Auditiorium.
A field of five young women will be competing for the title of Miss Shamrock during the pageant. Competition in the Miss Shamrock Pageant includes an interview with the panel of judges prior to the program and then on-stage introduction in casual wear, a talent performance of the contestant’s choice, an appearance in formal wear and an on-stage question.
The reigning Miss Shamrock 2017, Allison Merrill, will crown her successor at the conclusion of Sunday’s program
Here is a look at the field of contestants for Miss Shamrock 2018.
Victoria Hampson – is the 17-year old daughter of Andy and Jody Hampson of Graettinger. Her siblings are Brandon, Cassy and Drew. A junior at Graettinger-Terril High School, Tori has been on the High Honor Roll all three years and is also a member of the National Honor Society. Tori is also involved in Choir, Band, Jazz Choir, Speech, FFA, Drama, Student Council, and Cheerleading. She has aserved as FFA Reporter and Former FFA President, Dance Team Captain, and Cheer Captain. She has received letters in Basketball Cheerleading, Football Cheerleading, Drama, Choir, Band, Dance and Speech.
In the community, Tori is a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church where she enjoys helping with bible school as well as singing during Church Services. Victoria has been very involved with Community Theater for the past five years in both Emmetsburg and Spencer.
Victoria is currently undecided about her future career, but would like to attend Northern Iowa Area Community College then transfer to a university.
Mary Nelson – Mary is the 18 year-old daughter of Jim and Diane Nelson. She has three siblings: Robert, Maggie and Katie. A Senior at Emmetsburg Community High School, Mary is on the A Honor Roll and is also on the National Honor Society where she serves as Secretary. Mary has received an Academic Letter, is her class secretary and is an Academic All- Conference student. At EHS, Mary is very involved. She is part of the Cross Country Team, Track, 4-H, FFA, Vocal Music, Individual Speech, Art Club, and Piano. She also was the statistician for the Wrestling team. Mary says, “One of the biggest accomplishments this year was being Captain of the Cross Country Team as they qualified for State again!” In her free time she enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, drawing and painting.
Mary plans to attend Simpson College in the fall, where she will be majoring in History. While there she will be joining the Cross Country and Track Teams.
Arielle Roth – is the 17- year old daughter of Tim and Michelle Roth of Graettinger. Arielle has two brothers Kolton and Spencer and a dog namedSeven. Arielle has earned Scholastic Honors by being on the Honor Roll all three years of high school, and has been named once to the Distinguished Honor Roll. She was inducted into the National Honor Society and will be graduating with her Associate of Science Degree in 2019 from Iowa Lakes Community College.
At Graettinger-Terril, Arielle is very active by being a cheerleader since her freshman year, participating on the dance team, playing the French Horn and participating in the plays and musicals. Arielle enjoys studying psychology and excels in English courses provided at school.
In the community, Arielle is very active in her church and act as an active member of the current pastor search committee. Arielle has practiced in her worship/praise team at her church as well as helped with activities with elementary and middle school students.
Arielle plans to attend Northwestern In Orange City, and study Psychology/Social work and Neuroscience.
Hannah VanHeuvelen – is the 17 year-old daughter of David and Laura VanHeuvelen of Emmetsburg. Her siblings are Christopher, Taylor, Joshua and Audrianna. She is a senior at Sunshine Bible Academy where she has received the Outstanding Actress Award in 2018.
She has received multiple Excellent and Superior ratings in Oral Interpretation. She placed fifth out of almost 80 contestants in 2017 in a writing competition. Hannah has been sent to National Fine Arts in multiple events since 2015, including Women’s Honor Choir and All State Honor Choir in South Dakota. Hannah enjoys singing at nursing homes, assisting elementary teachers, cleaning ditches every fall and spring.
Hannah is active at New Hope Chapel helping with worship team, cleaning and Sunday school. She has helped prepare a team for an upcoming mission trip to Puerto Rico, and has participated in three Servant trips to different places in South Dakota. Hannah also completed a mission trip to Honduras for two weeks in 2017.
Hannah plans to become an Occupational Therapist. She has a passion for mission trips and hopes that her talents and education in Occupational Therapy will allow her to be better to help those in need. She loves working with kids and hopes to travel the world to help as many people as she can.
Ashlyn Harrington – is the 16 year-old daughter of Steve and Sondi Harrington of Algona. She has one older sister, Sam. A junior at Bishop Garrigan High School, Ashlyn has been on the Honor Roll all three years of High School. She is currently taking some online college courses. In addition to her studies, Ashlyn is a cheerleader at Algona High School, and a member of the band, choir, drama and trap shooting teams.
In the community, Ashlyn is active in volunteer in her church through Christian Leadership and frequent volunteer work. She also volunteers at her Church where she can be found singing during mass. Ashlyn can be found singing and playing her guitar for school mass.
Ashlyn plans to attend a four-college to study either teaching or something in the medical field.
