City Council Appoints New City Administrator and Reappoints Board Members
The Emmetsburg City Council met on Monday, Jan. 8 for a regularly scheduled meeting. There were four councilmembers in attendance: Todd Bell, Mike Hermansen, Brian Campbell, and Ryan Berkland.
During the Report of Officers section of the Council meeting, City Administrator John Bird stated that the City is now taking reservations for the cabin at the Five Island Campground. At this time, Memorial and Labor Day weekends are booked. An article regarding rules and pricing for the new campground will be published in the near future. If you are interested in making reservations for the cabin at this time, please contact Emmetsburg City Hall.
Police Chief Eric Hanson reported that Monday night’s meeting was his last meeting before his retirement. Hanson began working for the department in July of 1985.
“So I guess I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the councilmembers that are here, Mayor Heddinger, John [Bird], Kim [Kibbie]. It’s been an interesting ride, I guess. My time here in Emmetsburg and obviously my last day comes up on the 19th [of January]. I just wanted to express thanks. I mean, I think we’ve had a really unique situation; I say unique because I don’t know if other town have what we’ve been able to enjoy between the police department and the council,” Eric Hanson began. “I’ve been very lucky; I think I’ve been extremely lucky, if that’s the best way to put it, for what I’ve enjoyed here in Emmetsburg But I just want to express my thanks, my gratitude to the councilmen here tonight, and again, John and Kim and Myrna for a great ride.”
The City of Emmetsburg will be hosting a retirement reception on Friday, January 19 from 5p.m.- 7p.m. at The Shores Community Center.
In new business, Travis Cooke was officially appointed as City Administrator/ Utility Superintendent. He will be taking the position currently held by John Bird.
The City Council meeting on February 12 has been moved from its original time of 6 p.m. to 12 p.m. for the annual budget planning/ review meeting.
Finally, Mayor Myrna Heddinger recommended the reappointment of the following individuals: Zeline Gappa to the Parks Board, John McNally to the Planning & Zoning Commission, Greg Moser to the Board of Adjustments and Review Board, and Dave Rouse to the Lake Board. All appointments were unanimous.
“I think it says something positive for the people you’re appointing and something positive for the boards that they’re on that we have these people willing to be reappointed when their terms are up,” Councilman Brian Campbell stated. “That something is happening right.”
“No hesitation on their part either when I called to ask them,” Mayor Heddinger added.
