Iowa Lakes opens the door to ‘vast career opportunities’ for local radio broadcaster
Bernadette Poeppe Merrill already had experience in broadcasting when she enrolled in the broadcast media specialist program at Iowa Lakes Community College, but it was taking classes that showed her the opportunities available in the field.
“My time at (Iowa Lakes) was everything for me,” Merrill said. “Having worked as a part-time DJ at my local radio station, I thought I knew a lot about broadcasting, but I quickly realized I hadn’t even scratched the surface.”
Now general manager of KLGA and KLGZ in Algona, Merrill graduated from Iowa Lakes in 1994. While in college, she earned the SMARTS Broadcast Systems scholarship and participated in cheerleading for both basketball and football.
Merrill credits Dr. David Nixon, professor of broadcasting and executive dean during his 12 years at Iowa Lakes, for showing her the possibilities broadcasting presents.
“Dr. Dave and the other professors showed me the vast career opportunities that broadcasting had to offer and what I needed to know in order to do them,” Merrill said.
